How do you know that your pay will be automatically deposited into your account on payday?
How do you know that the cookie you just ate does not contain peanuts (which you’re allergic to)?
How do you know that the gas pump is really dispensing 15 full gallons of gasoline into your tank?
How do you know anything for sure?
You don’t; you trust.

All teams struggle with change. That’s a good thing.
If everyone agreed to no change, very few positive breakthroughs or improvements would occur.
Change that is only introduced from the top is usually tame, predictable, forced or faked.
Change is a team effort, not an individual one.

A shift in thinking and perspective is in order regarding leadership.
There is massive attention placed on who and what a leader is, and it’s evidenced by thousands of books and periodicals. Nearly all of them focus on the person at the top.
Leadership is always about more than one person. There are a multitude of leaders at all levels of an organization.
Regardless of your position, you are a leader based on your values, vision, and commitment to continually learn. To be fully successful in this endeavor, be trusting and trustworthy, and be respectful.

Why Do We Fear Change? April 24, 2012

Change is a funny thing; we know we need it yet we resist it like the dickens.
And the primary reason people resist it is fear.
Fear of the unknown, fear of extra work, fear of not knowing what to do, fear of looking foolish, or fear of additional responsibility are a few of the reasons.
Change is normal and change is good, but sometimes it is hard.
The older we get, it seems, the more we crave predictability. Perhaps life simply wears us down until change becomes a huge inconvenience regardless of its size.
I believe that change keeps us young. It’s like having children in the house. You’re forced to pay attention and keep up.

Don’t Tell Me What To Do! )) May 21, 2011

A recent Seth Godin blog post (Self directed effort is the best kind) reveals his belief that an entire system (coaching) has been organized around the idea that we’re incapable of pushing ourselves to do more unless we’re forced to do it by our boss or coach. That’s not entirely accurate.
Probably 90% of what we know, we’ve learned by observing, which then fuels and supports our belief system. When faced with a more than typical challenge or problem, we automatically rely on our knowledge and belief systems to make a decision. And then, if necessary, we seek the benefit from another person’s perspective.
We don’t make decisions in a vacuum. But Seth wasn’t talking about decisions, he was talking about our actions; actions that come from the decisions we make. I’d say it differently than Mr. Godin. My take on the subject is, “When you receive counsel from those who tell you that – ‘You can’t do it by yourself,’ run like hell.”
Seek wise counsel; don’t rely on the advice of magazine ads or infomercials, or people who pay attention to those sources.
In other words, there is a time and a place for seeking professional help – physical, mental, and spiritual. Learn to recognize the difference between not being capable and not being self-motivated. Life is a shared experience, and sometimes it’s fun to have someone push you. Just don’t use it as a crutch.
Perhaps the question we need to ask ourselves before hiring a coach is – “Do I really need this person’s help?” And then answer honestly.
